Gaming as Culture: Essays on Reality, Identity and Experience in Fantasy Games
13 May 2012 | 12:48 pmSince tabletop fantasy role-playing games emerged in the 1970s, fantasy gaming has made a unique contribution to popular culture and perceptions of social realities in America and around the world. This contribution is increasingly apparent as the gaming industry has diversified with the addition of collectible strategy games and other innovative products, as well as the recent advancements in videogame technology. Gaming as Culture presents the most current research in fantasy games and examines the cultural and constructionist dimensions of fantasy gaming as a leisure activity. Each chapter… -
[Unisystem] Eldritch Skies
11 May 2012 | 2:35 amIt is 2030. The Gilman-Hawking drive has given us access to the stars. But we are not alone. They're out there: aliens, gods and monsters. They're also down here. The Miskatonic Antarctic Expedition found the elder ones' city in 1931. The mi-go crashed in Roswell in 1947. In 1958, as quietly as possible, not knowing what we were doing, we bent occult powers to our hands and took the step to Mars. The third time, the men who made that step could not step back. We fled back into our cave for a while. But rocketry, and the Soviets, brought us back out soon enough. Competition took us to the… -

And yet, despite their many differences, it is in the heart of each of these bold strongholds that the heart of the samurai dwells. Strongholds of the Empire explores a handful of the many unique cities throughout Rokugan,… -
A Translation of Evil
8 May 2012 | 2:52 amA Translation of Evil is a short adventure for the Macabre Tales roleplaying game. What if it were possible for a book to actually be evil? What if the written words themselves had the ability to inflict harm upon the reader? If so, how do you fight something that is, in essence, only an idea on a page? Will the protagonist succeed in translating this vile tome or will his fate be far more sinister? Macabre Tales is the dominoes-based RPG of Lovecraftian horror that strips out the "contributions" of later authors and focuses solely on what Lovecraft himself created. Spectrum Games, known for…

The Gassy Gnoll: Three (Plus) Elements of Comedic Necromancy (May of the Dead) from Game Knight Reviews
16 May 2012 | 6:00 amThe Gassy Gnoll isn’t much of a comedian. Being Found in Elfland - 31B
14 May 2012 | 5:15 amBeing Found in Elfland Chapter Thirty-One: Part Two To the City of Hairy Men I had noticed that all of the men had the long hair and beard. The fact that even the younger men had such displays had caused me to feel that there was more to the growths than a local fashion. I thus looked to the man that had approached our table to ask a question. “Did a woman cause whatever it was that had you grow the hair and beard?” “No. In fact, it was due to a woman that we once thought this curse removed from our land. It will take more than a barber to now fight the cause of our hairy heads.” A… -

9 May 2012 | 5:00 amBeing Found in Elfland Chapter Thirty-One: Part One To the City of Hairy Men ... Sir Titurel spoke in return. “These are not my women. I am merely their protector. They have come for their own reasons.” Another of the men boldly said, “Well, if you aren’t man enough, those of us here certainly are.” The hairy men laughed at this, but I tried to set the conversation on proper terms. “We are not just any women. We have a mission, and it isn’t with goat herders.” Our group really does not know what they are facing. -

4 May 2012 | 5:00 amBeing Found in Elfland Chapter Thirty: Complete Leaving the Valleys of Sleep ... I again was turning to leave, when I heard, “It might not be easy getting my gem.” The head of the great snake lifted in alarm as I spun back to her. “No, it might not be, but don’t hold that against us. We will do what we can. Once we get that gem, don’t then think to make it hard on us. There are two people in there counting on you, Seshanar. I am counting on you. Once we get that gem, let us balance any debts between us, then go home laughing, crying, and being friends. Don’t spoil that,… -

29 Apr 2012 | 5:00 amBeing Found in Elfland Chapter Twenty-Nine: Part Two The North Beacon ... I moved up to touch my husband as I said, “And the beauty of us ladies stays constant. We overdress. We wear the petticoats to spread out our skirts. We wear the girdles to tighten our bellies.” Charlie said, “We put padding with our boobs to make them appear larger.” I believe that she intended that as a joke, but I kept my features appearing serious as I replied, “If you feel it helps. I don’t need to do that.” “Meow.” Earning friendship takes work. -
Being Found in Elfland - 29A
24 Apr 2012 | 5:00 amBeing Found in Elfland Chapter Twenty-Nine: Part One The North Beacon ... Charlie sat up that night with Sir Titurel. I told them both to wake me, but they did not. I woke up to feel my husband beside me, so I shot out of bed wondering who was on watch. I saw Seshanar turn to me. I moved to sit next to her as I spoke my concern. “I feared the men had gone on to bed.” “The men?” “Charlie is my husband, Seshanar.” I did find it strange that I said what I did, although I spoke the same comforting thoughts that I mentally told myself. “Charlie might be a lady, but I really do not…

Players seeking games | Re: Looking for Sci Fi / Fantasy / Metahuman
13 May 2012 | 6:03 pmHeyo Sharlene,Dunno if you're still poking around for a game or not, but I wanted to toss my new original dark fantasy/horror game your way and see if it fits.Heres what we don't have:A numbers/Game system - Everything is literary based, no dice rolling for stats or fighting or money. We rely on the honor system as far as character stats and actions, and if need be, an admin will step in during stories to sort things out.Teen Angst - There is some family drama, but none of the characters involved are under the age of 18. Science Fiction (non Star Trek) | Free PCGame RPG based on WingCommander Privateer.
13 May 2012 | 9:13 amHello , I found this very nice looking RPG site, the feeling of atmosphere is great. I missed the RPG era of the 80s, I thought RPGs were silly. I bought many PC games with RPG elements that I was unaware of. I bought D&D3.5 and read through the Players handbook and wow I went out and bougt about 20 RPG books, Im at a stage now where I want to play my own Rules, which brings me to my Posts point - I have programed to my best efforts a PC RPG game, its free and is based on the old game WingCommanderPrivateer but turn based and no mouse. I hope you give the game a home ? and please let me… -

The Beautification of 6d6
12 May 2012 | 6:31 amOne issue we need to tackle over the coming months is improving the appearance of 6d6 – its products and web sites. This will be a gradual process that starts with the storefront – 6d6RPG.com – as we update it inline with the one-product strategy. The storefront has a job to do – converting interest into sales – so it cannot simply be a work of art. That said there is a lot of little improvements in the design and layout which will give it that more professional feel. Over on 6d6Fireball.com, it is a different story. This is our ‘corporate’ site but… -
What 6d6 Has To Do Next
11 May 2012 | 7:50 amWhen the going gets tough… Having had a big-rethink and pondered what is wrong with 6d6, we are ready to announce our new plan for making a profit. The One Product Strategy All our attention will be focused on selling 6d6 Online. The logic is simple. It makes us the most money. Plus the more people who get involved with 6d6 Online the more attractive it becomes to potential customers. Thus we get more customers and this virtuous circle can grow. Also, by focusing our marketing on single product we can afford to spend more time on the message, making it better and strong by constantly… -
This Is What Is Wrong With 6d6
10 May 2012 | 6:30 amThe last two weeks or more have been spent rethinking where 6d6 is and the drive to make 2012: The Year We Make a Profit is taking us. During this time we have talked among ourselves, talked to other people and tried to look at 6d6 with cold, hard business focused eyes. These are some notes we made on this process but here are the headlines. Too Much Time Spent On Physical Products About 50% of my time is spent working on the design and organising the production of physical products, e.g. books and cards. This is in part because we have special requirements (we need cards), in part because we… -
Making a Living from Kickstarter
9 May 2012 | 4:35 amThe links below are a three part analysis of RPG Kickstarter projects by the Geek Industrial Complex blog. I need to read them in more details but some numbers jumped out at me. The average successful RPG Kickstarters raises $8,251.31 per project from 110 backers on average. About $45 per backer or the price of an average RPG book. Given the low volumes, the Kickstarter fees, postage etc etc, at best each Kickstarter will have to pay out 50% in unavoidable costs (the real figure is probably about 80% but I’m being generous). Lets assume that the rest of the money is income for the… -
There Is A Change Coming
3 May 2012 | 4:09 amOne third of the way through the year and we are bang on target to make a profit. And yet, there is no way we are going to hit our financial goal for 2012. How can we be on target and yet expecting to miss our goals? The simple answer is growth rate. What we have done in the first four months of the year is generate a modest income but the month-on-month growth rate is too slow. The targets for the early months were deliberately set low, a way of easing us into this project and preventing us failing before we had even started. However from now on, our income has to grow significantly each…

Reaper Spam and/or Harpoon Spam
24 Apr 2012 | 12:21 pmI ordered my 2nd Reaper helljack earlier this week. I never thought I would be doing that. When I started played Mortenebra’s theme force recently, I created a list that used cheap Slayers (only 5 points in the theme force) to fill out the force. Playing that list, though, I realized that I would rather have multiple Reapers than multiple Slayers. Reapers don’t have the Slayer’s huge Combo Strike, but they have Reach and with their Harpoon’s Drag feature they have the potential for 2 attacks followed by Sustained Attacks. Reach, with both a solid… -
The MAT 8 Hypothesis
19 Feb 2012 | 10:40 amI’m approaching the completion of my first year of playing Warmachine. A recent game with a Coven theme force where I included Bane Knights (who proved incapable of hitting anything even while mildly scaring my opponent with their mere presence) caused me to start thinking about how best to evaluate the potential effectiveness of a melee unit/model in a list. So now I’m working on what I called “The MAT 8 Hypothesis”: If a melee unit/model cannot reach MAT 8, either by itself (with Gang, Combined Melee Attack or some other ability) or with the help of the… -
Lich Lord Terminus Battle Report
21 Jan 2012 | 12:00 pmThe list I played last night: 35-point list Lich Lord Terminus +4 Leviathan – 9 Leviathan – 9 Mechanithralls (max) – 5 Brute Thrall – 1 Brute Thrall – 1 Brute Thrall – 1 Necrosurgeon & Stitch Thralls – 2 Withershadow Combine – 5 Darragh Wrathe – 4 Gorman DiWulffe – 2 I consider this my first “real” Terminus battle, in spite of a couple of 20-point Highlander games I played with him some months ago. This list is a modification (35-point reduction) of what is called the Terminus… -
My First Scaverous Battle Report – Boomhowler Bowl I
8 Jan 2012 | 3:34 pmI created this list with no real competitiveness in mind: 35-points Scaverous +5 Erebus – 8 Nightwretch – 4 Nightwretch – 4 Skarlock Thrall – 2 Boomhowlers (max) – 9 Bile Thralls (min) – 5 Gudrun the Wanderer – 3 Ogrun Bokur – 3 (client: Boomhowler) Saxon Orrik – 2 The point of this list was to play some of the models I have recently painted but never used, especially my Boomhowlers. The bolded models/units had never been played by me. The Bile Thralls I had only ever played once. Saxon Orrik and the Ogrun Bokur, only… -
Witch Coven Fast List (35-points) + Battle Report
2 Jan 2012 | 2:12 pmI had the idea for a new Witch Coven list built of the fastest units I could field: Witch Coven +5 Reaper – 7 Nightwretch – 4 Nightwretch – 4 Satyxis Raiders (max) – 8 Satyxis Sea Witch – 2 Satyxis Raider Captain – 2 Soulhunters (max) – 9 Darragh Wrathe – 4 The Satyxis Raiders + UA have Pathfinder, and the Raider Captain can give them an additonal +2″ movement. The Soulhunters are Incorporeal when they activate near Darragh Wrathe–and Mr. Wrathe himself is no slouch with a SPD 8. The Reaper is the…

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition Sells 1 Million in 5 Days
16 May 2012 | 5:00 amMinecraft was already a huge success on the PC, but it would seem the game blew away all expectations when ported over to Xbox Live Arcade. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition managed to sell one million copies in just five days of being released. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is being sold a $20 per download, so you can only imagine the hefty profit Mojang and the port developer, 4j Studios, has managed to accrue in this short amount of time. User statistics also shows that in this short period players have spent 5.2 million hours playing Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, have played 4 million total… -
Diablo III Alternatives
14 May 2012 | 5:00 amIt’s no secret that in past I have been skeptical of the quality of Blizzard’s third entry in the Diablo series, Diablo III. Participating in the beta hasn’t changed that, and I have been actively looking for alternatives to play. The fact that Diablo III’s aesthetics don’t match the style of the earlier Diablo titles, that there is no modding for the game, that there is no LAN multiplayer option and an always online DRM (even for single player), the 4 player capped co-op, the oversimplification of that game and its difficulty (i.e. lack of stat allocation), a pay-to-win atmosphere… -
République Barely Meets its Funding Goal
13 May 2012 | 5:00 amHere we have a Kickstarter funding story that almost wasn’t a success. République is a very interesting game concept that certainly seems to have a lot of talent (developers behind the likes of Metal Gear Solid, Halo, and F.E.A.R.) and ambition behind it, but for quite a while it seemed that République’s Kickstarter wouldn’t meet its goal in time. The entire premise of the game is that the player doesn’t control the main character Hope directly, but instead by interacting with the environment (i.e. hacking into security systems) and giving her cues about what to do in certain… -

This version of Wolfenstein 3D allows for players to jump straight into any level of the three episodes; “Escape from Wolfenstein”, ”Operation: Eisenfaust”,… -
Adventure Time Game Comes to DS/3DS this Fall
9 May 2012 | 5:00 amMATHEMATICAL! The first ever retail game for one of my favorite cartoons is slated to come out this fall. D3Publisher, Cartoon Network Enterprises, and WayForward will be behind Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?! , which may very well be the best title for a video game ever. The plot behind this game (surprisingly enough) is that the Ice King has stolen Finn and Jake’s garbage. Wait! There’s more! He stole their garbage to construct a Garbage Princess, and that was enough to get Finn and Jake to adventure through the Land of Ooo to teach Ice King a lesson. Series…

LARP can save the world!
3 May 2012 | 11:00 amAverage people save the world For many larpers role playing has been an outlet into a bigger world. One where they can understand who they are as a person more deeply. Remembering Sierra On-line
9 May 2012 | 5:38 pmKings Quest On journey of revisiting older retro games, I found myself re-exploring the Sierra On-line games series. Back in the 80s and 90s, Sierra On-line was my favourite game company. With their hit series such as Kings Quest, Space Quest, Quest for Glory, Police Quest and Leisure Suit Larry. As a child learning computer programming, I used to dream of working for them one day. Back then playing computer games was a cult hobby. So not everyone had access to it. Most other kids weren’t computer savvy enough in how to install, setup and play a computer game. And vast majority… -
ULTIMA 6 (VI) – One of the best Open World Games
5 May 2012 | 11:25 pmUltima 6 had great colorful graphics for its time RATING 10 OUT OF 10 If I think about games which had an incredible level of immersion, Ultima 6 comes to mind. Ultima 6 stands as one of my favourite games, even competing with “The Elder Scrolls : Oblivion” from Bethesda Softworks. I remember the days playing Ultima 6 back in the early nineties (Original release was 1990). The game was so engrossing that I almost didn’t care about eating, drinking or sleeping. As the fictitious land of Britannia, felt like a virtual world of its own. That would keep on living and churning,… -
2D vs 3D games
5 May 2012 | 11:20 pm2D Games to visualize your reality from a different perspective. Similar to reading a book versus watching a movie. Where your subconcious mind fills in the blanks which are not spelt out. Similar to how when you dream and you hear a noise in your bedroom. And your subconcious mind will incorporate that noise into your dream. In some cases when I have had the option to play the upgraded 3D version of and old 2D games, I prefer the 2D version. Because I do believe it has some strengths over the 3D interface. 2D appeals to your imaginative subconcious mind. Whereas 3D is more… -
Wing Commander 2012 Remake – Wing Commander Saga Review
29 Apr 2012 | 9:12 pmWing Commander Saga 2012 with some spiffy new graphics RATING : 7 out of 10 Website : www.wcsaga.com Lately I’ve had an attraction for older / retro games. As playing the currently line up of games here in 2012 there seems to be something missing. While the eye candy continues to improve on games, there is nothing memorable that sticks. With many of todays modern games lacking in ‘character’. Wing Commander Saga has incredible Production Values If I think about a game which ‘sticks’ and has ‘character’ Wing Commander comes to mind. It was one day upon my quest to find… -
Morrowind Remake Review – Morroblivion vs Morrowind Overhaul
18 Apr 2012 | 10:39 amRATING 8 OUT OF 10 WEBSITE : www.morroblivion.com Morroblivion gives Morrowind a facelift Morrowind has been known as one of the greatest RPG games of all time. However, Morrowind was not my introduction to the Elder Scrolls series. Whereas Oblivion marked my personal entry into the Elder scrolls saga. And now in 2012, Skyrim would be the gateway into the Elder Scrolls for many players.
