Japanese RPG releases: J-Shop Watch February
8 Feb 2010 | 7:31 pmFebruary’s RPG releases in Japan are looking pretty big. Released on the 4th of this month were Namco Bandai’s God Eater for PSP and Star OCean: The Last Hope International for PS3. The former has been compared to Monster Hunter, while the latter was the subject of a bit of controversy among Xbox 360 owners in Japan. With news of that and Tales of Vesperia having moved to PlayStation 3, some RPG-lovers were miffed. The 10th will see the release of Sacred 2: Fallen Angel for the 360 and PS3. The Land of the Rising Sun won’t be getting the PC version. Feb. 18 will let two PSP… -

Both on the free trial site and official Lineage II website, NCsoft does not specify how long ago one might have cancelled his/her Lineage II account in…

I know that the pirate waits for us, so I don’t want any of you slacking in your duties.” The mate at the wheel asked, “Where should we head, Captain?” Terniff saw the master of the vessel look to her as he replied, “Widdershins around the lake.” She locked her gaze upon the captain. Instead of making any statement, she saw his eyes… -

4 Feb 2010 | 4:34 amHistory of Mardon Castle Chapter Fourteen Part 3 ... A soldier spoke from a window in the chamber at the top of the tower, “Come on down, Lord Axiste. There is nothing to fear.” Those words really did not put the elder kevalla at ease. “You have found the wall, and the ground below.” The soldier laughed before saying, “Just don’t look down and you will be all right.” “You expect me to climb all the way down to the wall, then climb up to Kaervel’s room?” The mage now came to the window to say, “Yes, I do. The first reason is that I am not going to presently expand the… -

30 Jan 2010 | 4:34 amHistory of Mardon Castle Chapter Fourteen Part 2 ... A voiced sounded from up in the riggings that caused Terniff to consider the situation. “Captain, there are a number of kevalla watching from the shore.” “Aye, everyone loves to watch a contest. Any sign of opposition?” “No, captain. The lake is calm and clear.” “Do you think we could have good fishing?” Terniff turned with her husband toward the captain of the vessel. That question concerned a topic that had not come up in any of the planning sessions. It thus came as a surprise that the captain would have such on his mind. -
History of Mardon Castle - 14A
25 Jan 2010 | 4:21 amHistory of Mardon Castle Chapter Fourteen Part 1 Axiste could tell that he was not the only one in his group that had noticed the unusual situation. He did not believe that the prisoners had recognized the problem, as their glances for chances of possible escape still bounced around and their complaints were still only mumbles of perceived mistreatment. Not all of the kevalla soldiers had noticed, and those that had seen the movement of a trailing creature had not made any signal of alarm. Axiste considered such slightly positive as he noticed the three human soldiers. They had seen, signaled… -

20 Jan 2010 | 5:07 amHistory of Mardon Castle Chapter Thirteen Part 3 ... Terniff smiled with the compliment to her appearance, but instead of bringing up her dissatisfaction with her hair she mentioned a topic that she preferred to speak about. “Will it take us that long to reach the lake?” “Oh, rivers are never straight, and our uncertainty of the turns makes our advance rather cautious. The clouds from a storm that passed during the night gave us almost no sight, so we are now at anchor. I will not get us back going until after Lord Axiste has been returned to shore.” “You will then need to wait…

Game review of Ghostbusters: The Video Game
8 Feb 2010 | 3:08 amThe experience of running around the Ghostbusters' firehouse encapsulates much of what's wrong and right with the game: you can talk to the portrait of Vigo the Carpathian, stand in front of a game of Q-bert (but not actually, ya know, play it in-game), slide down the fire pole, listen to Janine Melnitz answer the phone, and be stalked by disembodied disco jeans you picked up earlier in the game…but once you've walked around a few times there's not much else to do.- Read more... -

COUNCIL OF WYRMS
4 Feb 2010 | 3:37 pmHELLO OUT THERE, fellow gamers. I'm currently reading over my recently acpuried ADnD 2 ed. Boxed set of the Council of Wyrms campaign setting, and I must say I'm in love. I'm a gamer of about 16 years, give or take. My older brother who has been playing paper and dice games since the late 70s introduced me to them via Battletech. From the first time I hopped into the cockpit of a PXH-1 Phoenix Hawk, I was hooked on the paper and dice format.- Read more... -

Kingdom Hearts III is in the works
9 Feb 2010 | 6:53 amThe third main-line installation of the Kingdom Hearts series is in the works, according to series creator Tetsuya Nomura. Confirmation comes after Nomura hinted about the title last September. Nomura, who has served as director and designer on Kingdom Hearts titles to date, has told Japanese magazine Famitsu that his team is under pressure to work on Kingdom Hearts III from fans, and is working to bring it about. This confirms that the game is on the way, but is only in the early design stages. More on Kingdom Hearts III it comes. -
New Dragon Age title in early 2011
9 Feb 2010 | 6:46 amEA and BioWare have announced that the next title in its new Dragon Age franchise will be out in early 2011. Dragon Age: Origins just launched the series last November, and more downloadable content and a standalone expansion are in the works. The news that a second full title is coming in about a year shows dedication (and perhaps aggression) in advancing the Dragon Age line. Meanwhile, BioWare is currently basking in the success of Mass Effect 2. The third installment to that series is unlikely to be out until sometime in 2012. -
Star Trek Online offering lifetime subscription
16 Jan 2010 | 6:31 amCryptic Studios, the company behind Star Trek Online, is offering an alternative to the standard monthly pricing model that most MMOs run on. Instead of paying per month, or per year, would-be starship captains can put down a larger amount upfront, and guarantee their lifetime access to the game. I’m saying “lifetime” a bit liberally here, meaning as long as Star Trek Online stays online, although there are probably enough Trekkies in the world to keep it alive much longer thanTabula Rasa, even if it turned out to be underwhelming. Those who pre-order the game can sign up… -
Final Fantasy XIII promises over 60 hours of fun
2 Dec 2009 | 2:57 pmSquare Enix’s upcoming Final Fantasy XIII is, of course, going to be one big, long game. I expect that, you expect that. Now, Square Enix is giving us a number. FF13 will lock in at least 60 hours of your time in the first playthrough. Motomu Toriyama, who’s heading up the project, tells Kotaku: … the size of the entire game is considerable. Just running through the main story takes experienced players over 50 hours. For the first time, I think it’s possible to play through in full in about 60 hours or so. That’s for the storyline alone. For completionists, who… -
Warhammer Online’s new trial has no time limit
6 Nov 2009 | 10:17 amIn an effort to grow its player count, Mythic has released a new free trial for Warhammer Online — and this one never expires. While most MMORPGs are offering limited 10- or 14-day trials, Warhammer Online is allowing new and returning players to enjoy their online world indefinitely without paying a dime. Of course, there’s a catch. The trial caps your characters at level 10, so if you’d ever like to advance beyond the low-level quests of the game, you’ll have to become a paid subscriber. Still, there are plenty of things to do in those early levels, and you can play…

Your Majesty, I beg you …
3 Feb 2010 | 12:43 amAn excellent in-game analysis of adventurers from the point of view of the ruling classes. “What are these men? These men, sire, are those whom will think absolutely nothing of killing every single one of your guards if you send them onto their group. They will further never rest at that point from hunting you down and killing you because you have betrayed them. They value this perception of gratitude and their own infallibility more than they value your life or the lives of all of your men. Worse, your guards will prove to be meaningless to these assassins. They wield powers that can… -

The Savage Island – Free Adventure

The Savage Island is an introductory 1st level adventure for 3rd ed. OGL type games such as D&D. It is designed as a sandbox adventure where the players can explore the island in their own way. There are two main ways off the island plus a third that the GM can use to bring the adventure quickly to a close. A lot of background is provided on the island’s inhabitants and history with… -
How Not To Sell an RPG
22 Jan 2010 | 2:49 amI feel guilty about this post because I’m picking on a small publisher like myself and the life of a small publishers is hard enough already. Any self-employed business person has to be a jack-of-all-trades because there is no one better trained or more experienced that you can delegate the work to. Inevitably there are some parts of the business you are just bad at but you still have to do them and accept the results are going to be far from ideal. However all business people need to be able to sell. Whether it is face-to-face or through adverts or web sites, it doesn’t matter. -
5 Travel Related Hooks for GMs
21 Jan 2010 | 2:26 amHere are five adventure hooks for travelling adventures for this month’s Blogger’s Carnival. 1. Shipwrecked This one works in just about any game system whether low fantasy or high tech. The vessel carrying the party sinks / runs aground / crashes or generally gets destroyed leaving the party stranded on a unknown island or planet. The players must work out how to survive this strange and hostile environment as well as devise an escape route. This scenario is a great 1st level, introductory adventure because it can dive straight into the action. It also works well for high level…

Arvale Flash Prototype
6 Feb 2010 | 8:07 pmWhile switching servers recently, I ran across this old thing on my server: You might have to right-click on it and select ‘Play’ for it to work. Click on it, then use Up/Down/Left/Right arrows to move around. It’s an old Flash prototype for Arvale I made while I was sick at home 2 years ago messing around in flash. Animations, Z-order, and walking works, and it even has some rudimentary collision detection (even the doors open!) . I just wanted to see how difficult it would be to make a tile based RPG in Flash for someone as coding-retarded as I am would be. It took me a… -
JLPT 2009 Level 3 Test Results: I Passed?
2 Feb 2010 | 2:30 pmThis morning, I and thousands of other people received an email saying their test results were available on the JLPT website. That would be the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Or 能力試験 for short. According to my scores, I passed. Yeah, the 能力試験3級. I’m happy that I passed, but I had a way better article written for it if I failed. I’ll edit it up and post it later. A recent update to scare everyone who just checked their scores: The JLPT foundation (whoever they are [cue scary music]) sent out an email saying some technical difficulties happened and all test…
